DIY Big Sister Shirt – Affordable New Sibling Gift Idea

We are getting ready to welcome our newest nephew to the family! He has a great big brother & big sister already waiting for him, so I decided it would be fun to make coordinating but individualized shirts for each of them using heat transfer vinyl. I’m going to focus on my favorite design, the big sister shirt, probably because it’s the girly one, but I’ll show you all three together at the end.

I started with this great pink ruffled top from Target. Love the little bow at the neckline!
I really wanted to incorporate a crown, so decided to use “Little Princess & Big Sister” as my text.  If you like the design and use a Silhouette, I am providing the free Silhouette Studio File! If you make your own design, be sure to flip it horizontally before cutting from heat transfer vinyl. It should look backward on your screen.

Make sure you load heat transfer vinyl with the shiny side DOWN. I forget this the first time and had to recut. Oops! Once the vinyl is cut, the negative spaces need to be weeded out.

When your vinyl is weeded & ready, iron on according to the directions on your vinyl. I did learn the amount of ironing required depends A LOT on the shirt material. The vinyl adheres to 100% cotton MUCH quicker than blends.

Before you know it, you’ll have an adorable big sister shirt ready to gift!

For big brother’s shirt, I purchased a sweet basketball player image from the Silhouette store. For the baby, I went simple but oh so cute!

The blue heat transfer vinyl on the basketball shirt is Royal Blue from Expressions Vinyl (affiliate link).
